Because she is.
Originally built as a country club in 1930,
the Mermaid went on to become a casino, brothel,
boy’s school, gay nightclub, legionnaire’s hall,
and the legendary Mermaid Tavern that
featured world-class music and more.
By the late ‘80s, the property lay in ruins,
structurally unsound, destined for demolition.
In 1989, an artist fell in love with her and began
a restoration effort that continues to this day.
The Mountain Mermaid is now a horticultural
garden, and a declared monument of
historical, architectural, and cultural significance.
The Mermaid is also a versatile location
for photographers and filmmakers.
Period antiques, rich architectural detail
and mellow coloration grace the
building and grounds.
Fresh air and extraordinary light
meld with great architecture for a sense of
rustic elegance amidst rural bliss.
