The Mermaid is located in the mountains above
Los Angeles in Topanga Canyon, the celebrated vortex of art and eccentricity,
surrounded by what is now the largest urban park in America,
the stunning Santa Monica Mountains.
This historic 1930s architectural gem is situated on several mountain-view acres
of rural bliss with lush gardens, water features, and meandering pathways.
The Mermaid is appointed inside and out with a remarkable array
of architectural antiques, period furniture and fixtures.
Food for the soul. Candy for the eyes.
Wildlife abounds. Native butterflies and moths are bred on-site for release
into the wild. Guests attest to the relaxing and restorative properties of the site.
Nature, serenity, and beauty are the prime amenities at this bucolic retreat.
Your host, Bill Buerge, is a gardener and artist with a penchant for preservation.
The Mermaid has been his muse and canvas for over two decades.
Great architecture, grand scale,
beautiful rooms, gorgeous gardens, a pool, views,
and old-world charm as long as your arm!

The Mermaid is passionate about preserving our irreplaceable
natural heritage. The Mountain Mermaid butterfly gardens are filled with native California
caterpillar host plants to help bring back the Monarchs, Swallowtails
and other indigenous butterflies and moths that are fast disappearing. Fritillaries,
Mourning Cloaks, Ceonothus Silkmoths, and others are reared and released at The Mermaid.

“...so gorgeous, so absolutely perfect,
that you simply may cease being from the overall loveliness overload”.

“How does one express in words what one experiences most deeply?
Sunday morning, February 8, dawned bright and crisp.
The rising sun brushed Topanga’s mountains with a patina of gold,
the breeze whispered its secrets, and a red-tailed hawk rode the thermals
flaunting the brightest red I’ve ever seen in the wild. How can one be any happier?
The heart would burst with joy with one more beautiful experience.
That afternoon, the Da Camera Society brought the Moscow String Quartet to
the Mountain Mermaid and continued the morning’s transcendental joy”.

“This magical place is a work of love and succulent flair.
The terraced landscaping is never ending and The Mountain Mermaid has brought peace
to the environment by careful placement of drought resistant plants and
ground coverings. The hues of greens, periwinkle, and henna catch one’s eye
as you let go of the stress of the day and view the canyon at dusk”.
Elizabeth Matusak, Torrance, CA

“We like them bright and we like them happy.
And when they’re also incredibly easy on the eyes, we really like that too.
This shindig held at The Mountain Mermaid is all of the above,
emphasis on easy on the eyes.”

“Just wanted to let you know that I was looking through the LA Conservancy
website and debating whether or not to renew my membership, since money's
a bit tight this year, and then I read your history with the Mermaid
(very well-written, by the way). I am really inspired
by your dedication to preservation and renewed my membership.
Thank you for preserving this historically significant property”.

“The colors and textures of The Mountain Mermaid are incredible
and there are so many great backgrounds for photos!”

I visited the Mountain Mermaid in Topange Canyon today and fell in love!
We didn't end up booking the Mermaid, but we found Bill wonderful to deal with,
and the place is sooo amazing!

At the horticultural haven known as The Mountain Mermaid...
an energy of inclusion, enchantment, artistry and nature was undeniably palpable.
Hummingbirds and butterflies flitted by, and peacocks echoed
their wholehearted congratulations with their raucous songs right at the perfect
times throughout the ceremony. There was indeed, an air of magic afoot,
synchronicities abound, and true love alive and well in the land!
